Function of chloroplast located sugars in acclimation to cold temperatures

The aim of our project is to understand the function of stromal located (neutral) sugars during accli-mation to cold, down to freezing. To this end we wish to identify elusive sugar trans¬porters, we will characterize enzymatic reactions controlling stromal sugar levels and we mo¬dify stromal concentra-tions of selected sugars. A forward-genetic approach will be initiated with the aim to understand the role of starch. Finally, we will decipher signalling functions of stromal sugars and ROS during cold acclimation of Arabidopsis. In sum, in the first funding period we expect to identify novel modulators and integrators within this acclimation process.
